Loco for Cocoa: 4 Unbelievable Health Benefits of Cocoa
At Unwrapp’d, we create our energy bar dough flavors with nutrient-dense ingredients in mind. One such superfood—found in four of our flavors, including the NEW Chocolate Sea Salt—is cocoa.
We use cocoa powder that is not processed with alkali, meaning our cocoa retains more of its flavanols, a type of antioxidant. This is important because many chocolate-flavored foods contain cocoa altered by chemicals in order to appear darker in color. We’re not down for that kind of cosmetic enhancement.
And cocoa powder isn’t the only form of cocoa found in Unwrapp’d. We use raw cacao nibs—fermented and dried bits of cocoa beans—in our Mint Chocolate and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavors. Raw cacao was revered by the Mayans, who made it into a drink and consumed it for energy.
We’ve already mentioned how cocoa supports the immune system, but check out these other amazing perks:
1) It may blunt the effects of social stress, meaning it can help prepare you for life’s stressors—presentations, networking, interviews, etc.—and who doesn’t want that? Cocoa powder also contains magnesium, a mineral that is depleted when the body is under stress.
2) Improves risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This is a multi-pronged approach by cocoa as it can decrease the physical effects of stress (see #1), increase well-being (see #4), decrease LDL cholesterol, lower markers of inflammation, lower the risk of type 2 diabetes (see #3), and promote the availability of nitric oxide, which is needed for blood vessel dilation (relaxation).
3) It helps your cells take up glucose which they need to make energy. An inability of your cells to respond to insulin leads to type 2 diabetes.
4) And our favorite: it can improve your mood and energy level. Perfect for a pre-workout snack.
