The Smarter Way to Fuel Summer Workouts

We all know what it feels like to crash during a workout.  You feel dizzy, tired, hungry, and upset that you can’t get a few more reps in or go a few minutes longer.

Exercise is a stress on the body, as is not eating enough before a workout.  If you’re not fueling appropriately for exercise, your body will have to deal with the stress of both of these conditions, resulting in less-than optimal performance.

Whether you’re going for a run, doing a HIIT workout, or a hot yoga session, fueling appropriately before your workout is key.  There are typically two approaches to fueling before a workout.  The first is fueling solely with simple carbs for a quick burst of energy, while the second involves fueling with complex carbs and a mix of fat, fiber and protein.

1)    Simple carbohydrates are quickly digested into glucose that rapidly enters the bloodstream and is taken up by cells.  This blood sugar spike is felt as an energy high followed by an energy low, and may cause feelings such as fatigue, irritability, and sugar cravings.

 2)    Complex carbohydrates – carbs that contain fiber – are digested slower than simple carbohydrates, meaning glucose enters the bloodstream at a slower rate.  Eating fat and protein with complex carbs further slows down digestion and contributes to steady blood sugar and energy levels.  Eating a meal or snack with a mix of fat, fiber, and protein will provide sustained energy to get you through your workout.

We created Unwrapp’d energy bites specifically to provide pre-workout fuel in line with approach #2:

o   Dates are a whole foods source of carbohydrates and fiber, meaning they provide sustained energy.  Bonus: they also contain electrolytes

o   Nuts and seeds supply healthy fats and protein

o   Organic cacao nibs, cocoa powder, and cinnamon help promote steady blood sugar levels

One of the things that athletes enjoy most about our bites compared to prepackaged bars is the ability to choose your portion size. If you just need a little boost, have one bite. If it’s a longer event or workout, try three bites or more.
