Are You Addicted to Your Favorite Snacks?
Give a mouse a sugar-free cookie and he’s going to want... another cookie.
Ok, the studies I want to share with you were performed on rats, not mice; but the point still stands.
Companies use “sugar-free” and “diet” as marketing slogans which typically mean the product contains low-calorie sweeteners. That sounds good at first glance, but here’s another term for those fake sugars:
Compared to sugar, what these alternative sweeteners lack in calories, they make up for in the intensely sweet flavor. That sweetness acts as a signal to our brain, which responds with pesky sugar cravings. And studies like those above show some high-intensity sweeteners to be 20x more addictive than regular table sugar.
Simply put, the entire artificial sugar model is broken:
Companies replace sugar with artificial sweeteners to lower calorie counts. You ingest it and your brain recognizes the sweetness, only to crave more. So you snack more. You then search for your next sugar hit, artificial or otherwise. The vicious cycle continues until you end up consuming more calories than you intended, ironically defeating your reason for choosing the artificially sweetened snack in the first place.
